Sick (Fit) Notes

You might need a fit note (sometimes known as a sick note) if you’re unwell and cannot work for more than 7 days, including weekends and bank holidays.

You do not need a fit note if you cannot work for 7 days or less. If your employer needs something in writing for the first week, a self-certificate form (SC2) can be used.

You can ask for a fit note from a healthcare professional supporting your care, such as:

  • doctors
  • nurses
  • pharmacists at GP surgeries, hospitals and clinics
  • physiotherapists
  • occupational therapists.

They will assess whether you’re ‘not fit for work’ or ‘may be fit for work’ with support from your employer.

You do not need to pay for a fit note if you’re off sick for more than 7 days. If you require a sickness certificate for the first 7 days of sickness, a charge will be made for issuing a certificate.
